Engage and connect your team

- If you are new to leadership or currently in a leadership position, my question to you is: Why do people follow you? I mean, why would anyone trust you enough to accept your leadership style? I ask myself and my team this question with the intention of provoking intentional, innovative thought and dialogue. What I found is successful leaders know how to create an inclusive environment that engages and empowers your team to connect with each other and collaborate with other teams in the organization. That's what I want to help you with in this lesson, how to engage and connect with your team. First, encourage open dialogue throughout your team. Open dialogue consists of encouraging others to freely communicate constructively which, in return, creates a work environment where honesty is the norm and safety is standard. A great way to create this environment is to build your team's communication by creating diverse project teams, having an open door policy, and asking team members for input. Doing this will put you well on your way in connecting with others. Next, communicate a central common goal for the team. An example of a common goal could be follow up with every client after an initial meeting. The common goal should be communicated frequently; for instance, in morning huddles, on communication boards, and in team meetings. Communicating a common goal helps bring people together. Finally, develop all of your team in the area of inclusion. Look, if what you believe goes unchecked, more than likely, it will lead to exclusive actions that can have negative effects on others. Developing your team doesn't have to be tough. For instance, you can have your team members discuss an article in your usual team meetings. Also, reward innovative ideas and practices. Have coaching sessions with your team members who aren't meeting inclusion standards. No matter what you choose, choosing to develop your team in the area of inclusion will definitely engage the team. Starting now, make it a point to connect with your team using open dialogue, communication, and developing an inclusive environment so you can connect with your team and be a leader who makes great things happen.
