- While we don't like to believe that someone would sabotage another person at work, it does happen, but even when it's not malicious, an ill-placed comment or strongly expressed opinion can harm reputations with alarming ease. These career-stalling or worse, career-ending narratives can build at an incredible pace. Maybe one person crossed a boundary I'd asked them multiple times to honor, and I finally put my foot down. That person now tells a colleague that Tara is difficult to work with. That colleague is in a meeting with others when Tara's name comes up. So he says, without much thought, "I hear Tara is difficult to work with." One of those people is in a meeting with Tara the next day. And when Tara pushes back on an idea, like any engaged employee might occasionally do, that anchor perspective is confirmed. Tara is indeed difficult to work with.
