- As someone who spent years studying and applying lean principles, I can tell you that one of the most transformative practices is holding meetings at the gemba, where the actual work happens rather than in distanced boardrooms. When we meet at the gemba, we create a shared perspective quickly because everyone is looking at the same reality. And by quickly, I don't mean rushed. I'm thinking of efficiency. While a board meeting often requires a lot of discussion time for participants to get on the same page, a shared perspective happens quicker when everyone is observing reality directly at the gemba. For one client, a typical meeting that took 60 minutes was replaced by a gemba visit with less people that took about 15 minutes. Imagine the amount of work you could get done in that extra time.
