When done well, Lean is very visual and intuitive. Visual standards and controls are a means of communication for all work aspects. They tell you when something needs to be done, where someone needs to be, how the progression of a project is going, and many safety measures. Let's say I'm measuring the quality of the work product produced every day. I'll have the letter Q on the board and 31 spots that represent the days of the month. If our team defines a green status as fewer than two defects, but we had five today, then today's date is colored red. Very quickly, anyone can see the quality metric of this production. When I say visual board, that might be a physical board, a SharePoint or a digital dashboard that communicates the status. Not every metric in the scorecard has to be on the boards. Use the 80-20 rule. You only need to visualize a metric that captures 80% of the issues. Safety, quality, delivery, inventory, and productivity indicators are the most common in manufacturing.…
