- I'm not a runner, but I've watched a lot of marathons and cheered on my friends who are runners. There's an interesting thing about long races like marathons. They have mile markers, and the runners use the mile markers to motivate themselves and celebrate incremental gains. They don't stand at the starting line thinking, only 26 miles to go. They take it one mile at a time. They have to stay fully engaged for the entire race, so they break down something really hard into small wins that can be celebrated. The same concept of breaking down ambitious targets applies to big business goals too. If you have a long-term goal like tapping into a new market or tackling a big internal metric, you'll want to find a way to give people quick wins. A best practice is to give people a win of some kind every 30 days. The trick is not to make it the same win. For example, say you want to increase customer retention by 12%.
