Align yourself to what matters to engage others

- When you were a kid, did you ever have a parent, a teacher, or a coach say, "Because I said so," when they were asking you to do something? Did it make you more or less enthusiastic about it? Less, obviously. You may have complied because they were an authority figure, but you are probably less than thrilled to be doing so. Unfortunately, that dynamic still plays out in the corporate world all the time. Leaders, both formal and informal, believe everyone should care about something because the leader said they should. But it doesn't work that way. Even if the formidable leader yields some immediate compliance, they'll never build lasting commitment because no one sees why what they're saying matters. And because they don't see why it matters, they don't fully engage. It happens in the macro when a company lacks that unifying purpose and everyone is kind of untethered. It also happens in the micro where people don't see why a particular project matters and they choose not to answer…
