USA FREEDOM Act

- The Patriot Act contained a clause that limited it in duration and that act expired in 2015. Congress then passed a new law with a similarly long name that seems designed just to make it a cool acronym. The Uniting and Strengthening America by Fulfilling Rights and Ensuring Effective Discipline Over Monitoring Act of 2015 is notably referred to by its acronym, the USA FREEDOM Act. The USA FREEDOM Act extended many of the provisions of the Patriot Act, but it also added some new controls designed to improve oversight of government surveillance. One of the most significant changes is that the USA FREEDOM Act eliminated the bulk collection of call detail records that was authorized under section 215 of the Patriot Act. It accomplished this by prohibiting the FBI from issuing blanket orders for the production of tangible things.
