Marketing and financial privacy
- Marketing privacy in the United States is covered by both self-regulation and federal and state law. We already discussed the federal laws applying to marketing back in the limits on private sector data use portion of this course. State laws also introduce issues that affect marketing and financial privacy. For example, every state has a law that implements protections against unfair and deceptive trade practices. These laws provide state attorneys general with the authority to prosecute businesses that engage in unfair and deceptive practices at the state level. Individual states also have adopted laws governing privacy in broad and narrow terms. Later in the course, we'll discuss the California law that protects individual privacy for California residents. Other states have adopted laws protecting marketing, financial and healthcare privacy, including issues like access to medical records and credit histories.…
