- What I learned as a PhD student was that my obsession with perfection was exactly what prevented me from completing my dissertation as soon as I could have. I often dismiss my own ideas as ridiculous, or ones that could never work. This fear of failure is exactly what prevents many employees from sharing their creative ideas or committing to innovation. As HR professionals, we must help leaders create psychologically safe environments. In those environments, employees are not afraid that they will be ridiculed or disciplined for sharing ideas that may not seem feasible to others. Creativity is the generation of novel ideas, and innovation is the application of those ideas. Some ways to activate both is to engage in group brainstorming and promote the benefits of diverse teams.
