- There are a lot of potential goals you could focus on. So which should take precedence and how do you decide? One useful lens is your personal values. Who do you want to be as a person and a professional? What do you want to learn? And as my colleague David Lancefield likes to ask, "What will have made me proud?" After all, over time, your values shape the choices you make and those choices add up. When you understand the values that drive you, maybe it's being a leader who truly helps your team develop, or being the most reliable colleague, or being a person that never stops growing, it's easier to determine where you should focus, especially when you add in one more lens, which is time. The first question you can ask yourself is, "What's most important right now in this moment?"
