- AI will seem difficult or impossible to measure if some of the misconceptions about measurement itself persist. There are just three reasons why anybody ever thought something was immeasurable, and they're all three illusions. We call these three illusions, the concept, object, and methods of measurement, that COM, if you prefer a pneumonic. In this lesson, we'll focus on the concept of measurement. That is, what does measurement really mean? Someone might think something's immeasurable because they misunderstand what it means. One of the most widely misunderstood elements of measurement is that it stands for an exact number. It hasn't meant that in science for about 100 years. Measurement really means a quantitatively expressed reduction in uncertainty based on empirical observations. This definition isn't just the def facto definition in the empirical sciences.
