- The main purpose of the control phase is to establish controls, so that improved performance levels are sustainable. It is important to take note that the control phase is the most critical phase in your DMAIC project. If it's not done right, all the improvement gains will evaporate after your project team disbands. And we certainly don't want that. The project team does not and should not plan to babysit the improved process, that is not practical. The control phase is all about enabling process owners and operators to control and regulate the process to ensure the improved performance level is sustained on an ongoing basis.
