- You've made it this far. I know you're committed to being accountable, but let's raise the stakes. To generate the greatest results for your team, you will need to take on accountability and responsibility. Now, if you ask most people to define accountability, they will describe it as being responsible. If you ask most people to define responsibility, they will describe it as being, yes, accountable. What's the difference? Being accountable is about making and keeping a promise. It's an agreement between two or more people. Let's say you're on a small team. You're operations, Sergio is marketing, and you both report to the boss. Sergio promises to send his report to the boss on Friday. And when he does, he's accountable.
