Letting go of "being right"

- Here's the opposite of being adaptable. "I'm right, and I know I'm right. How can I get them to see I'm right?" That's such a satisfying sentiment and so human, but it's also not very productive. Learning to be adaptable means accepting that, shockingly, we're not always right, and other people might have some insights to contribute. We know that intellectually, but in practice, it can be harder to accept. So here are three ways to open up our minds and actually embrace other people's good ideas. First, when people encounter stress, a typical reaction, and it's natural, is to focus inward. "What does this mean for me? What am I going to do?" That's normal, but it's not necessarily how we want to act or be all the time. Instead, something useful and healthy is to make an effort to pull ourselves out of that self-focused spiral, and instead think about other people. What are they thinking? What are they feeling?
