- Webcam hardware arrives in one of two ways. It's built into the monitor, which is the case with laptops, or you can purchase a USB webcam to perch atop an existing monitor. Either way, the webcam allows you to broadcast yourself, take snapshots and join the throngs of people who endure online meetings and enjoy video chat. Webcam hardware features a camera, obviously, and many also come with a microphone which becomes a second audio input as many computers and even monitors also feature a microphone. Something you'll find on a monitor perched webcam is a physical privacy shield. You can slide or flip this cover over the camera to ensure that no image is captured when you don't want an image to be captured. Fancier webcams, feature pan, tilt and zoom, often abbreviated PTZ.
