- [Instructor] Windows has offered ZIP file compression for several versions now. File compression reduces the space occupied by a file. It's also used to archive files, collecting several into a single compact file that takes up less space, and can be sent or copied as a unit. This type of compression is known as ZIP file compression, primarily because it creates archives ending with the ZIP file name extension. It's not the only file compression method, but it's one of the oldest and most common, which is why it's included with Windows as a feature. Windows 11 expands upon the compression options available beyond just ZIP archives. To view these options, right-click on a file icon, and choose Compress to. You see several options. ZIP, the traditional method, 7z, the 7-Zip compression, TAR, the Unix tape archive format, and other options are available for compression.
