- Work-life balance and moving beyond burnout are two topics that arise frequently in coaching and career conversations. The pivot approach to work-life balance would be to first set the brackets. Ask the person on a scale of one to 10, where are you now? And what does a 10 look like? Start with the plant stage. What's working? Even if they're at a three, what's working right now? What is helping you recharge? And what strategies have most helped you in the past? Then you can start to move into what does a 10 look like? Or even a seven, eight, or nine, if they're starting very low. What does success look like one year from now? If it's urgent and they have to get this figured out ASAP, what would be different? What would their ideal average work day look like? The second stage, scan, can be looking for skills and projects. Who do you know that's in a similar situation? Who's doing this well?
