Understanding coordinate systems in geospatial analysis
- [Instructor] Maps are merely models of the Earth's surface, and all models are wrong. Before we dive into the technical aspects of the project, there are a few foundational concepts in geospatial data science that are critical to cover. Coordinates and the coordinate systems are at the heart of geospatial data science, but can be often overlooked. Understanding how cryptographers represent Earth's surface on a flat map and how to choose the right coordinate system for your project is key to accurate spatial analysis. To start, it's important to understand that the Earth is not a perfect sphere. It's actually an ellipsoid or geoid. These are just mathematical approximations that account for the slight bulging around the equator. The way we represent this ellipsoid on a two-dimensional map has major implications for how accurate our spatial data will be. The ellipsoid is a smooth, simplified shape of the earth.
