- Why do people who bully do it? Is it intentional? If you've been bullied, your answer may be a resounding yes. But I got to tell ya, after 10 years in the business of resolving bullying, most of the time, it's not. So hear me out. Abrasiveness or bullying happens for two reasons. First, bullying individuals are low in social and emotional intelligence. They have no idea of the damaging impact of their behavior. Even if they've been told many times they need to change, they just don't understand why. Just to give you an example, when I first met one of my coaching clients, Jack, I asked him if he was ready to engage in coaching. He said, I guess so. I can't believe I've been walking around here like this for three years and nobody's told me. I wish they wouldn't have waited until I was about to be fired to let me know.
