Being the only one in the room
- Have you ever been in a meeting or at an event where you were the only person of color, the only woman, the youngest, or the only, well you fill in the blanks, how did it make you feel? How did you react? Though we may desire a seat at the table, no one likes the only one there because of the negative experiences that have been associated with it. Here are some common examples. Your ideas may be dismissed or you may not be asked for your opinion altogether. Insensitive comments are made and no one calls it out. You may not get invited out to lunch or the after work activities. You may be overlooked to lead new projects or be ignored for promotions. And you may not be recognized for your achievements. And you are assumed to be speaking on behalf of everyone in your identity group. All of these are considered microaggressions, subtle verbal and nonverbal, slights, insults, indignities and denigrating messages…
