Power map your network

So, whenever you're navigating a career transition, it's helpful to be strategic and organized about who in your network can champion you along the way. One tool to help make this easier is what's known as a power map. It's a simple exercise you can do just to think strategically about who in your network has influence or power to help you along the way and how much interest they might have in championing your success. Start by examining your internal network. This might include your boss, colleagues, leaders you've worked with, HR partners, and cross-functional colleagues. Then consider your external network—former coworkers, mentors, industry peers, recruiters or hiring managers, or people you've met at conferences. For each person who comes to mind, ask yourself two questions. First, how much influence do they have? And then, how much interest might they have in my success?
