GenAI vs. traditional AI vs. automation

When people talk about AI, they often use one word to describe several very different things. So let's separate three ideas. Automation, traditional AI and generative AI. Automation is about following rules. You tell a system what to do and it does the same thing every time. An invoice approval workflow might send a document to the right manager if it is over a certain value. Or an e-mail system might send a confirmation when a customer completes a form. Automation is powerful, but it depends on clear instructions and predictable processes. Traditional AI is different. Traditional AI is often about prediction, classification, or optimization. It might detect fraud, predict customer churn, recommend products, or forecast demands. Or it could identify defects in a manufacturing process. In these cases, AI looks for patterns in the data and uses those patterns to support a decision. Generative AI takes this further because it can create something new.
