Design effective leaderboards
- Leaderboards are a familiar aspect of games, and they can effectively drive learning. A leaderboard is a ranking of individuals or teams which have the highest score or most points. The argument for having a leaderboard is this: because everyone's score is displayed, it creates a competitive environment, and everyone works really hard to be at the top of the leaderboard. But truth be told, being in the top 10 of the leaderboard is highly motivational, but being the 15th person on the leaderboard is a lot less motivational, and being number 100 on a leaderboard can in fact actually be demotivating. If you are designing a gamified system to encourage learners to engage, learn, and change behaviors, you need to develop a leaderboard strategy to motivate as many learners as possible and not inadvertently or accidentally demotivate anyone.
