Create a motivating challenge
- Humans like to overcome challenges whether it's diving into the depths of the ocean, climbing the tallest mountain in the world or something more realistic like finishing a neighborhood race in under an hour. Challenges are highly motivational. Gain thinking and content gamification are about positioning skills, knowledge or behaviors to be learned as challenges to be overcome. Too often it seems that the online learning modules or the classroom instruction that we design and deliver is not challenging. It's often the exact opposite of challenging. There seems to be a belief in some circles that providing painfully easy instruction with no challenge is the best way to teach and foster learning. It's not and interestingly enough research supports the idea that challenge is a strong motivator in learning. A challenge is simply a call to engage in a difficult but achievable task.
