Requirements for a successful mapping project
- As you embark on the discover phase of a process capture project, it's essential to ensure you have support from the top of the organization. Some types of projects lend themselves to a grassroots bottom-up approach, but a process mapping project is not likely to be one of them. You need top level buy-in for resource allocation, budgeting, and a commitment to evaluate and honor the results. In some organizations, you may also need leadership support simply to ensure enterprise wide cooperation from stakeholders and subject matter experts. Next, you need to assemble a team. You'll want representatives from several parts of the organization to ensure you create the optimal result. Naturally, you'll need staff and the managers who are actively involved in the current process. You'll need a representative from IT because it's a very rare process that doesn't rely at least in part on technology.
