Process mapping with Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) diagrams
- Business process model, and notation is an international standard for process mapping that's maintained by the object management group. It was created to add additional detail and rigor to flowchart and swim lane style diagrams. By design, BPMN uses shapes that are familiar to flowchart users, though some shapes are used in slightly different ways. BPMN also employs varying border styles and icons within the shapes to represent additional layers of process and technical detail. A key goal for BPMN is to create diagrams that enhance communication between business users and IT staff. In some implementations a properly configured BPMN diagram can trigger automated execution of the process flow. I'll be using Visio to create a BPMN diagram, but there are many apps available to create BPMN maps. BPMN allows for both conventional flowchart and formats.
