Starting life as a UX freelancer when you’re just out of college
- If you're in college, you're graduating soon or you've just graduated, you may be tempted to jump right into a freelance career. After all, we're told over and over again that we are part of the new gig economy and UX freelancing is certainly that. The problem that you may find, however is that the critical reason businesses hire UX consultants is because they need certain types of expertise. Without a lot of experience, it can be really hard to get those exciting consulting gigs. While you might be able to successfully be able to be independent, you may find yourself using your UX education more for staff augmentation than as a solution provider. That is, you'll be working full time to help a company and be working closely with employees. But you won't be one yourself. Yes, you certainly can learn on the job but you likely won't have the same UX learning and opportunities provided to employees. And your hourly or day rate may not be so much better that it justifies you not reaping…
