- So do you need to actively market yourself as a freelancer? On the one hand the answer's a resounding, yes, of course you need to market yourself, but you market yourself through your website, your blog, your thought leadership, your UX related volunteer activities, and the collective visibility that you gain from your UX adventures, and your extended UX network. When it comes to advertising expenses I only have one line item, my business cards. Admittedly I've experimented with web advertising, particularly when I get teaser offers from the likes of Google, Bing, LinkedIn and Facebook. But by and large I've found that the most success doesn't come from advertising, and certainly not by cold calling clients, but through networking and visibility. There is certainly no harm in offering to take colleagues and clients out for coffee or a drink, and in fact this is often a great way to get to know someone.
