- The recent acceleration of artificial intelligence innovation and its growing adoption across almost all industries will likely make it a core defining characteristic of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. While AI has been in development since the 1950s, it's finally here as a viable mainstream capability, and it's being incorporated into all manner of solutions, from search engines to self-driving cars. AI is one of the most misunderstood and underestimated technologies of our time. For many, it erroneously conjures up images of HAL 9000 in "2001: A Space Odyssey," or C-3PO in the "Star Wars" saga. In addition, AI isn't just one specific technology, but instead it's an umbrella term for several types of technologies. How might we define AI today?
