Managing job search settings and preferences

- [Instructor] Before you start actively applying for jobs, it's a smart move to make sure your LinkedIn settings are ready to support your search and to help you stay in control of your visibility. Let's walk through a few important areas to check. First from your profile, in the upper right, select the Me icon, and from here, select settings and privacy. From this page on the left, you'll see several tabs, including account preferences, sign in, and security. You have your visibility settings, data privacy, advertising data, and notifications. Now, I do recommend taking a look at these, but you don't have to change everything here. There are a few important spots that I want to recommend checking out. The first is in the data privacy tab on the left. Here, if you scroll down, you'll see job seeking preferences, including job application settings where you can decide things like if you want to save application questions and answers. You can also decide to upload your resume and share that out with recruiters if you want. I'm going to back up here and below this, you'll see here, share your profile when you click apply for a job. So with this one, you can choose to share your profile automatically when applying for a job or keep it private until you decide to engage with the recruiter. Below this, you can also signal your interest to recruiters at companies where you've created a job alert, which can quietly increase your visibility without needing to reach out directly. Taking some time to fill this in will help LinkedIn recommend better jobs and show recruiters that you're a match for roles they're hiring for. Next, on the left go to notifications, and from here at the top I see searching for a job. If I click this, I get different notifications here regarding job alerts, save jobs, job recommendations, and so on. So for these, you have to decide if you want to receive notifications and how. And it's a great idea to go through this to make sure that you're not receiving too many messages, but you are receiving messages that will help you to find that right job. Now, let's navigate back to Nick's profile for one quick thing here, and that is, you'll notice here the open to button and that is open to work, something we'll take a look at in the next video. But just know that turning this on can also quietly let recruiters know that you're interested without publicly broadcasting it if that's what you choose. So if I click here and go to finding a new job, you'll see that this also allows me to enter in some different preferences and then I can decide who sees it. Again, we'll talk about this in the next video. And then I want to go up to the jobs tab. And if I click on the jobs tab, you'll see another area here on the left where we can adjust our preferences. If I go ahead and click on that, I can adjust things like your work interests and open to work status, salary preferences, saved resumes and application settings and so on. So that's just another way to personalize your settings. Now, a few small changes here and there can make a big difference in the quality of your job search experience and in making sure that your information stays private and professional. Once you have these settings in place, you're ready to move forward with confidence.
