We'll start off with the role of investment advisors, aka IAs. An investment advisor is a type of wealth manager who can offer their clients access to an open shelf of investment solutions, which is over and above the standard set of managed solutions that a financial planner has access to. And what this means is that in addition to mutual funds, ETFs, and SMAs, an investment An investment advisor can buy individual fixed income securities like corporate and government bonds, structured notes, term deposits, and individual stocks. They can also run sophisticated derivative strategies and buy hedge funds, private equity funds, and sometimes more. Investment advisors can also provide clients with access to primary market new issue activity or fixed income and equity securities that their firm might be involved in underwriting and can offer margin loans and short selling as well.
