Trimming with the edit point in mind

- In this chapter, we're going to become more familiar with being able to adjust our edit in the timeline, or as it's known fine tune it. A few chapters before this we started to look at the editing process and we're now in that editing process, we're continuing to fine tune our edit, before we begin with other workflows, such as effects and color correction. In order for us to all be on the same page, I'd like you to go to your Chapter Six event folder and open up the Chapter Six, underscore One project. We can also switch our workspace by going to "Window", "Workspaces", and in this instance, just go to "Default". This will change the layout to that default workspace and we can close a few windows. We're not really using the browser right now. So let's just give that a close. So we have a nice large view of our viewer, not to mention let's also close the "Inspector" so that our workspace is less cluttered. Excellent. Now, when I talk about the edit point, I talk about when we cut from one clip to another and this point happens to be so important that there is a tool made for this will allow you to play a certain amount of seconds before and after the edit point. This can be done in your timeline with what's known as "Play Around", the edit point between the third and fourth clip. Let's take a look at that and I want you to press "Shift forward slash". - Thing. That's a part of our heritage or DNA - And you can see there that it played a certain amount of seconds before and after. This is all set up within preferences. So if you go to your Final Cut Preferences and we take a look here under playback this Pre and Post-Roll Duration is specifically related to that play around edit function. That's because this is a documentary and there's a lot of dialogue. I want to extend both the Pre and Post-RolL. So am I going to set this to three seconds in Pre and three seconds in the Post-Roll Duration as well. Once you press the "Return" key that it will accept that new change. I'll close out my Preferences. Now with my playhead selected I'll press that "Shift forward slash" in order for us to play this back. - It's just something that's a part of our heritage or DNA. - Excellent. Now on top of this, we can actually take our playback and loop it when we play around our edit points. In fact, if you head to your "View" menu under "Playback" you'll find out, first of all, that "Play Around" function not to mention your option to "Loop Playback". Excellent. So I'll press "Shift Question Mark" - Something. That's a part of our heritage or our DNA. It's just something that's a part of our heritage or DNA. - So as we go through our project we're going to become more familiar with how we flow from one shot to the other with this play around edit and that functionality of being able to loop that playback. And with this in mind we begin our fine tuning edit journey.
