- Why does gender matter at work? You might assume that a person's gender does not matter for most jobs or tasks. While this might be true, I'll share with you how gender affects outcomes even without our knowing it. Before we dig in, let's go over a few definitions, so we are all on the same page. Gender refers to sociocultural norms, identities, and behaviors. Gender has two components: gender identity and gender expression. Gender identity refers to how a person identifies. Gender identity is broad and can include identifying as a man, identifying as a woman, and identifying as non-binary. Gender expression is how a person publicly expresses or presents their gender. This can include behaviors and outward appearance such as dress, hair, makeup, body language, and voice.
