When does bias happen?

- It can be unsettling to learn that our brains are likely to make errors despite our good intentions, and that bias may have impacted our decisions about people that work with and for us. To address this, we need to create some strategies. Let's start with getting better at identifying when bias is likely to happen. The first step is to clarify when you're making assessments about people in the workplace. One way to think about assessments is to recognize moments when your decisions will result in a workplace related reward, recognition, or opportunity for a colleague or employee. This can happen informally or formally. The formal decisions are possibly easier to identify. Some examples of formal decisions include hiring, promotions, performance ratings, calibrations or talent reviews, assignments to key task forces, awards, bonuses, and salary increases.
