Sharpen your questions when you suspect bias is present

- Getting skilled at using strategic questions can help you block bias when you suspect it's present. Recall that bias is caught in patterns. It can be difficult to determine if a particular decision or word choice is problematic in that particular context or situation. Remember, the first step is to notice the presence of one of the conditions that can make bias more likely and to pause and focus on asking questions. This can include ambiguity, being rushed, or narrowly defining success using primarily masculine standards or elite credentials. Let's look at questions to ask based on possible bias. The first is performance bias or the higher standards. What criteria are we using? Are there other criteria that can lead to a better assessment? The motherhood penalty.
