Let's talk about intersectionality

- As you are likely seeing, gender bias is complex and contextual. It occurs as our brains try to simplify and generalize in order to make quick snap judgements. As such, to be truly able to identify bias, it is critical for us to have a conversation about intersectionality. Defined by Kimberle Crenshaw, intersectionality is a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects. For example, in a simplified view when I say the term woman, who comes to mind? For many, it's a white able-bodied heterosexual woman. And when I say the term black person who comes to mind? For many, it's an able-bodied, heterosexual black man. Many folks are missing from those views, and one way to see who is missing is to consider the intersection of gender with age, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, social class, disability, veteran status, national origin and other dimensions of group identity.
