Is there only one form of gender bias?
- Gender bias does not work the same way in every context and with each person. While bias is the error in assessments, you can think of stereotypes as the content that is causing the error. Recall that stereotypes are widely held simplified and essentialist beliefs about a specific group. However, gender stereotypes cover a broad range of beliefs. And since bias is contextual, whether the stereotype creates an advantage or disadvantage depends on the situation. And since much of this happens out of our conscious awareness, you may not be fully aware of which stereotype is activating the bias. However, let's identify some of the more documented gender biases as a means to help you better see them at work. Let's start with performance bias.
