Criteria are key to fighting bias
- Learning to be crystal clear and intentional about the criteria you use to make decisions is a key to blocking bias. Let us examine a couple of the ways in which bias affects the criteria you use. First is the higher standard. Someone with equal qualifications will be subjected to increased scrutiny. In other words, their credentials do not bear the same weight as the same credentials from another. Often, the person facing more scrutiny is the person who does not match the historical picture of who has been successful in the role in the past. How do you catch the higher standard? One way is noticing increased scrutiny. If you hear yourself or others asking a lot of questions about someone's qualifications.
