Bias is an error in assessments
- While the word bias may sound accusatory, all people are prone to biases. This course is not about whether or not you have biases because we all do. Instead, my aim is to help you identify this process in order to block it. When I asked Professor Shelley Correll, a leading researcher of bias in organizations, if she could offer me a clear, easy to understand definition, she said, "Bias is an error in assessments." While this is easy to understand, the complicated part is understanding all the ways these errors happen. Our brains are very good at categorizing information. For example, even though you are viewing this course for the first time, you already know how to interact with it. You might pause it to take notes or set aside a certain amount of time to view it without distractions. This is very different from the way you might view a video for entertainment.
