- No leader succeeds alone, not in their job, not in their growth. We need to help our leaders enroll support from key stakeholders who are busy with their own priorities and pressures. The bad news, as challenging as it is for leaders to change their actions, it can even more challenging to get others to change their minds. Old perceptions persist, unless leaders do one specific thing. That's the good news. Multinational studies, and also, my own experience, shows a factor that strongly drives success to change stakeholder perceptions. It's follow up, and research done by Goldsmith and Howard with hundreds of thousands of participants, they found if leaders do little to no follow up with their stakeholders, the perceived change is close to zero. But if leaders follow up consistently, stakeholders perceive much more positive change, and over half of their evaluators give them the highest possible improvement rating.
