Use absolute and relative references in formulas
- [Instructor] One great thing about creating formulas in Excel is that you can create references to cells, which will update the formula if their values change. In this movie, I will show you how to create those references so that they either change when you copy them or don't change. My sample file is 01_05_Relative, and you can find it in the Chapter01 folder of the Exercise Files collection. This workbook has two worksheets, and I am currently on the sheet named Mixed Refs, which is short for references. At the top, I have an interest rate of 3.5%. And below, I have a table of years, and I want to calculate the value of the investment at the end of each year. So let's say that I'll start in 2024 and deposit $100,000. So, in cell C5, I'll type 100,000, and that is a starting investment. Now, I can build formulas that will calculate what this investment's value will be if it grows by 3 1/2% every year.
