- [Instructor] People ask me all the time, "Why does data need so much cleaning?" And my answer is simple, lack of control when data is entered. Every day data is entered into Excel spreadsheets. Often the approach is just, "Get the data, we can deal with it later." But this lends itself to data that comes in many forms, and not exactly what we want. For example, how many times have you seen Middle Name and then you see in the data there's middle initials, and even full names? The data cleaner can clean something no matter what it looks like, but they're not magic. They can't make up data that's not there, or entered incorrectly in the first place. Also, if data's incorrect, it can stop processes further down the road. Let's navigate over to the data tab of the ribbon. You might be familiar with some of these commands on the ribbon, like sort and filter. These work with data after it's been entered. In Microsoft Excel…
