Enumerating using SNMP
- The Simple Network Management Protocol, SNMP, is an evolution of an earlier protocol known as SGMP. SNMP was approved as an internet standard in 1990 and has been used widely in network management systems since that time. While most network equipment vendors provide SNMP support in their products, Microsoft has recently announced it will see support for SNMP and has essentially removed it from Windows. Nevertheless, you'll find a lot of SNMP out there. An SNMP manager application is used to manage devices through an SNMP agent running on them which gives the SNMP manager access to a vast amount of internal device status and configuration information. The SNMP manager will typically store this information in what's known as a Management Information Base or MIB. Information in SNMP is given an object identifier.
