Creating a culture of supportive candor

- Candor is about speaking frankly. Being less filtered, and more to the point. This is in contrast to always being quiet, or too nice. Not surprisingly, candor is a defining characteristic of high-performing teams. But, it's also something that is often in short supply. Partially, that's because we all value civility. In most workplaces, thankfully, there is an expectation that we will all be kind and civil towards one another. That's great. But sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing. When civility is too strong, candor suffers. People choose to be kind and not offensive, instead of being candid. Clearly, both of these behaviors are valuable. The key is to make sure that candor is always at least a little stronger than civility. I mean, what good is being nice, if we can't perform our best?
