- Many people don't know this, but I'm a total introvert, 100%. I prefer quiet evenings at home to busy nights out and need to recharge after networking events. But you don't need to be an extrovert to be perceived as likable at large gatherings. Here's how you can tap into your strengths to get the most out of your next event. Skip the pitch. Many assume that demonstrating competence is the most important factor when we meet new people, however, trust and warmth, aka likeability, must come first. According to research, for your expertise to matter people must trust you otherwise your strengths can come across as a potential threat. So if you were taught to introduce yourself with a 30 second pitch, save that for later and start out by simply being curious. Questions like, what brought you to this event? How did you learn about this group? Or, how many of these talks have you attended? Can all be easy conversation…
