- [Instructor] I remember being in a deposition years ago in a sexual harassment case. The employer was trying to rely on an employee handbook to show the employee knew how to complain about sexual harassment. In the deposition, the manager testified he had not seen the employee handbook since the day he was hired some 12 years ago and he wouldn't even know where to find the handbook. That is not good. Don't you be that manager. Employee handbooks are usually the most important employee communication document at your company, and they have many legal impacts. Like job descriptions, employee handbooks are not required by law. Managers are often surprised when I say that since most companies have one. You want an employee handbook that is up to date. You don't want an out-of-date employee handbook because compliance obligations can change yearly. If you're a manager, make sure you know your employee handbook.
