The virtuous cycle of employee engagement
- So who is responsible for engaging employees in sustainability? Company leaders? Rank and file employees? The sustainability team? HR? Someone else? In a perfect world, every employee would feel responsible for engaging their colleagues . In practice, that kind of culture takes time and a lot of effort to cultivate. So let's look at two ways that employee engagement typically starts, top-down and bottom-up. Top-down refers to official or sponsored initiatives to engage employees in sustainability. This means it's a formal part of someone's job responsibilities, and it has real resourcing like a budget. Often this function falls to someone on the central sustainability team, but it may also be assigned to people in HR, marketing and communications, or elsewhere. The ideal executive sponsor and champion of employee engagement is a company's chief sustainability officer. If your company doesn't have a dedicated CSO or equivalent, it may be another executive.
