Cultural awareness for the cybersecurity professional

Cultural awareness is a broad phrase. It can mean being aware of ethnic culture, geographical culture, company culture, or even culture specific to the cybersecurity department, which is often different from the overall company culture. Let's start with culture associated with gender. Thankfully, recent diversity, equity, and inclusion organizations have shed light on how little we may know about things like unconscious bias. A popular bias in the cybersecurity industry is the unfortunate assumption that women are less technical than men. As a result, when discussing a technical role, some people use the pronouns he or him when the person's gender is unknown. Not only is this dismissive to women, but it excludes an entire community of non-binary individuals in our industry.
