- [Instructor] Disease is a constant threat to humans. Historically, diseases like the plague, cholera, smallpox, and the measles have swept through different parts of the world and killed large numbers of people in a relatively short period of time. In more recent times, we've seen mass outbreaks of HIV/AIDS and Ebola. And throughout time, it seems that influenza has killed millions. The famed Spanish flu alone killed approximately 75 million people worldwide between 1918 and 1920. When dangerous disease spreads quickly, we often refer to it as an epidemic. In times like this, we count on epidemiologists, specialists in analyzing data to see what may be causing the epidemic and how to stop the disease in addition to finding ways to prevent future outbreaks.
