- One fun way to compose hand lettering is to have it form fit a host shape, also referred to as a nesting shape. This can also reinforce the overall concept or messaging of the design as well. Let me show you how it works. So, I decided I wanted to do a typographic design of the Big Apple, New York City. So, it started with creating what I'm calling the host shape. I've also referred it to a nesting shape. Same principle, if you think of a bird nest and the eggs within it. They're nested in there and that's kind of how we're going to handle the type. So, the first thing I do is what is called bone work, meaning I don't worry about the volume and the weight of each letter form, I'm just trying to compose the words in such a way that they're going to flow and work together within this given shape.
